# Formula Given for Percentage

Have you heard about the term percentage? It is the fraction or a ratio that has the value of 100 as a whole. This term was derived from the words of Latin ‘per centum’ which basically denotes the statement ‘by the hundred’. In an examination, you might have scored 55 out of 100, the percentage that you got is equivalent to 55 percent. The formula which is given to calculate the percentage of any quantity is known as the percentage formula. There are two ways of calculating percentages of any quantity as the unitary method and the changing of the denominator to 100. In order to understand this concept in a better way, we will have to solve some examples. In the next few sections, we will deal with the calculations based on the unitary method and denominator method.

## Calculation on Percentage with the Help of the Unitary Method

The formula which is given to calculate the percentage of any quantity with the help of the unitary method is the given value/ the total value * 100. Let us solve some examples to get conceptual clarity about the topic.

**Example 1:** It is given that, the total number of beads is 20, where the number of red beads is 8, and the number of green beads is 12. Find the percentage of red beads with respect to the total beads?

Given that,

Total number of beads = 20

Red beads = 8

Green beads = 12

Using the formula given for percentage = given value/ total value * 100

8/20 * 100 = 40 percent. Similarly, the percentage of green beads is,

12/20 * 100 = 60 percent.

Therefore, the percentage of red beads with respect to the total beads is = 40 percent.

**Example 2:** It is given that, in an examination hall the number of boys is 75 and the total number of students is 150. Find the number of girls?

According to the Question,

Total number of students = 150

Total numbers of boys in the examination hall = 75

Using the formula given for percentage = given value/ total value * 100

75/150 * 100 = 50 percent.

Thus the number of girls in the examination hall is = 50 percent or 75 girls.

## Some Calculations Based on the Denominator Method

The unitary methods are only used when the denominator is not the factor of 100. In other cases, you may use the denominator formula. Let us solve some examples related to unitary methods so that you understand the topic properly.

**Example 1:** It is given that, the total number of beads is 20, where the number of red beads is 8, and the number of green beads is 12. Find the percentage of red beads with respect to the total beads using the unitary method?

Given that,

Total number of beads = 20

Red beads = 8

Green beads = 12

Using the unitary method formula,

Out of the total number of beads mentioned which is = 20, the number of red beads is 8. We may first convert the fraction into a fraction that is equivalent.

8/20 = 40/100 as, 8 * 5 = 40 and 20 * 5 = 100

Thus, 40/100 = 40 percent.
