AMUL’s history began in 1946 when Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd (KDCMPUL) was formed. KDCMPUL was a cooperative of dairy farmers in Kaira District, who collected milk from the farmers and sold it to butter and cream manufacturers in Bombay.
However, the farmers were not getting the best price for their milk, and the transportation of the milk was not good.
In 1952, KDCMPUL decided to build its own processing plant, and the foundation stone was laid in 1953. The plant began to operate in 1956, and the first order was received from Bombay.
Later, in 1957, the Bombay Milk Scheme was launched, which gave a subsidy to the KDCMPUL.
In 1968, the KDCMPUL and the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) came together and formed the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.

The AMUL dairy cooperative is also involved in social projects. It has helped children with education, and it has provided medical treatment to the villagers.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd, popularly known as the AMUL Dairy, is a farmer-owned apex body of 9 lakh milk producers in Gujarat.
The federation, which began as a co-operative dairy plant of Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (KDCMPUL) in 1954, started procuring milk from other districts in Gujarat in the 1960s.
The AMUL Dairy procures milk from about 9 lakh milk producers and processes it into various products, including milk, ghee, butter, cheese, ice cream, and paneer. It employs over 4,000 people.
